of all the memoir tips, classes, and videos I’ve consumed—no one has brought up the fact checker or the lawyer AND THOSE ARE THE THINGS I NEED TO KNOW! 10k 😬

Thanks, Lisa. Because fact-checking is expensive and generally covered by the author, many people don't do it. For the legal review, finding a pro bono lawyer is possible. Many book contracts have the author cover the costs of fact-checking, all rights and permissions, and the cost of art, illustrations, or photos.

Depending on the book deal amount, you will have funds to cover these things & support yourself. And for one book contract, my publisher did agree to pay for the fact-check, so things can often be negotiated.
