There is no beauty like seeing your book among others and knowing that it will find its people. After four years of interviews and writing, I waited for publication day, feeling the weight of my work and worry. Would the earth shake or rumble? On publication day, I did a few interviews at home in Little Rock, Arkansas, and then ate ice cream with a childhood friend who grew up with me in Oark.
When my book came out this week, I received news that I had been invited to a residency at The Bellagio Center on Lake Como, Italy. The residency provides space for writers, artists, and others to focus on work related to climate change and the environment. Former residents include Joseph Stiglitz, Maya Angelou, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Michael Ondaatje, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg. When I began writing about the meatpacking industry, I had funding to work on one article. The fact that it is now a book is a testament to the commitment of poultry processing workers, labor organizers, writers, editors, poets, teachers, photographers, family, and lifelong friends.
May my book find her people,
Alice
